What it is:
StaticIP will poll your LinkSys router and
grab the DHCP-assigned IP address from the internal status page of
the router, formulate it into a web
page and upload it to your web/FTP site. All that is required
is for you to give StaticIP your router information
and web/FTP site info so it can post the dynamically-created HTML file
automatically.
Who needs it:
- Anyone who uses a LinkSys
DSL/Cable Router and has a dynamically-assigned IP address from
their ISP will find this useful.
- Those wishing to access their computer
remotely, across the Internet, but don't know their IP address
because it is always changing
- Person's who have a DHCP-enabled DSL line, but wish to have an FTP server available for their friends to send/receive files
Some uses:
If you have DSL or cable modem access using a DHCP-assigned IP address and wish to be able to remotely control your computer from a computer kiosk, school or even work, you can have StaticIP post your IP address to a web page. In the event your connection drops and reestablishes itself with a different IP address, StaticIP will update the web/FTP site with the newly assigned IP address and now, with version 1.1.5, has the ability to send you an email every time the IP changes as well as the ability to create the web page that is uploaded to your web server from a template (open TEMPLATE.HTM, loaded in the StaticIP program directory and look at the comments). The email sending feature can be turned on and off and will only occur if the IP address changes. StaticIP can be configured to check the IP against the last one it sent at any interval and will only upload the HTML file and send you an email if the IP address has changed since the last time it checked the router, so it only actually sends the HTML file when an IP address change has occurred. In the meantime it will happily sit in the Windows systray and only fire off at the user-defined intervals.
Tested Platform:
This has been tested with the LinkSys BEFSR41 (4-port DSL/Cable Router) using code through version 1.40.1 (released 9/10/2001)
